This Valentine's Day, despite all the negative political vibes polluting the airwaves and to preserve and protect my faith in love, I am building an Altar to Cosmic Love
Do you believe in a loving Universe? When I asked this question of a young Dad worn by the present and worrying the future, his answer came with the immediacy and finality of a bullet, “No.” The idea that anyone, let alone a parent, should have no trust in a love bigger than his own broke my heart. His answer revealed a desperate need in these between times for a bigger story of Love.
Science tells what’s been called a new sacred story. Observed, calculated, and interpreted, we now know that since the beginning, electrons, stars, and solar systems exist due to a basic binding energy and primal attraction that permeates and sustains the Whole. Planet, plant or person, one and all are gifts of this cosmic power. Romance, friendship, family, passions, hobbies, or vocations, all are examples of a Universe that is integrally relational with a bias for ever greater communion. Wow!
Science has called this mysterious attraction the power of Allurement. Religion calls it God. Philosophy names it Love. Spirituality teaches we are affected by and can affect the Law of Attraction. Quantum Physics describes the cosmos as an entanglement; the implication is that everything is intentional and relational with a purpose and place in the Cosmos. Expressing a Cosmological Spirituality, Thomas Berry wrote in the New Universe Story: "everything is held in the compassionate curve of gravitational attraction.” We are held. That's romantic!
What I'm sending this Valentine’s Day to every parent or anyone despairing of the future is an awareness of the immensity of this power. Consider, two hydrogen atoms combine with one of oxygen and this planet of plants, flowers and the persons precious to us live. Ilia Delio writes, “Consider the tremendous galactic tasks, performed every instance by this universe, and you will begin to feel the magnificence of the cosmic assortment of love.” Stars gravitate and Earth is born into the Milky Way galaxy; consider what's up and around us and feel held.
I am neither your proverbial ostrich nor high on legal Canadian Cannabis. I admit to being a deep-time, big history thinker who sees the spiritual entropy and the collapse of Modernity with evolutionary eyes: the end is, at once, a beginning; a new social era is gestating, and an acceleration of consciousness has begun. Audaciously, I declare for the world and the Noosphere to hear: “I believe in a loving Universe.” Do you?
